100 Professors from all over India learns the lessons of Big Data Analysis using ‘R’ at GTU

Ahmedabad: 100 Professors from all over India including One Professor from South Africa are learning the lessons of Big Data Analysis using ‘R’ at Gujarat Technological University (GTU). For the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Data Analysis using open source statistical package ‘R’, GTU has received registrations from scholars and professors of different fields of research MANAGEMENT, ENGINEERING, PHARMACY, economics, etc. GTU is organizing the FDP during 20-25 February, 2017.

GTU has received more than 100 Registrations from various parts of the nation include major Universities / Institutes like MICA – Ahmedabad, TISS – Mumbai, Kurukshetra University, Dr. D Y Patil University – Pune, Central University of Haryana, BANASTHALI UNIVERSITY – Rajasthan, Symbiosis Institute of International Business, Pune, VIT University, Vellore, Bangalore University and University of Delhi.

The programme is being organised under the guidance of Prof (Dr) Navin Sheth, Vice Chancellor of GTU. The primary thrust of this one-week FDP is to equip the participants with statistical research tools & techniques using open source statistical package ‘R’. Emphasis will also be given to understanding of traditional theories behind various statistical tools for academic research, Dr Ritech Patel, Section Head of Centre for Governance Systems (CGS) said.

Data is one of the biggest assets any company has in present time. Forbes predicted in 2015 that Total Data market is expected to nearly double in size, growing from $69.6B in revenue in 2015 to $132.3B in 2020. Now with the advent of digital economy varied avenues have opened up in the big data landscape. Data science, data analytics, data mining, data engineering, etc., all work together on a single platform but perform very diverse and significant jobs. Data is the baseline for almost all the activities performed today whether it is education, research, healthcare, technology, retail or any other industry.

What is R?

R acts as an alternative to traditional statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS, and Stata such that it is an extensible, open-source language and computing environment for Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, and Linux platforms. Such software allows for the user to freely distribute, study, change, and improve the software. It is a free implementation of the S programming language, which was originally created and distributed by Bell Labs. R performs a wide variety of basic to advanced statistical and graphical techniques at little to no cost to the user, Dr Dhaval Mehta, an expert said.

I have heard about Big Data and Data Analysis, but at Faculty Development Programme of GTU, I actually learnt how to use toolds and especially ‘R’. I also enjoyed networking with professors from prestigious institutes from all over India
