Demo of latest Japanese technology Welding machine & robots held at GTU

Ahmedabad: Demonstration of latest Japanese technology – Welding machines and welding robots (Thin plate welding) was held at Gujarat Technological University (GTU), Chandkheda campus by Japanese professors & industry experts. Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Japan financially supported this training event on High Precision Arc Welding Technology.

Panasonic Welding Systems India organised the practical demonstration of latest technology Robot at GTU, Chandkheda campus. Kobelco and Iwatani shared their Japanese knowledge with us on welding consumables and shielding gas respectively. Professors travelled all the way from Japan to India to educate about high precision welding technology and standardization in welding sector.  Due to this demo, students and faculty members of Keepsake Welding Research & Skill development Centre of Excellence (COE) set up at L. D. College of Engineering Ahmedabad got the knowledge about latest technology. The COE is working under MoU between Gujarat Technological University, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) and Keepsake Engg. Pvt Ltd, Ahmedabad and many short term course is run by the centre. CoE – Welding is equipped with sophisticated welding machines utilized by modern industry for quality production. The MIG welding machines, TIG machines & 8 Axis Robots are imported from Germany. The COE has HVOF Coating Facility & PAW (Wire & Powder) machine, Prof. (Dr) Navin Sheth, Vice Chancellor of GTU said.

Welders build the world we live in. America has dedicated one full month to welding called –National welding month which is April month. Welding is an essential part of everyday life. From cars to high rise office buildings, airplanes to rockets, pipelines to highways, none of it would be possible without welding. India is currently registering highest growth among major economies across world. We are now in infrastructure creation mode. And welding is the most essential activity to create infrastructure like Bridges, Railways, Energy, Shipbuilding and Transportation. As per one study by CII, we are having shortage of quality welders in India. We are going to require around 50,000 welders per year in next 6-7 years but the supply is only approx. 30000 welders. Thus we need to improve the skill of welders drastically and introduce new technology to increase speed of welding. By adopting these two methods only we can mitigate this shortage, Dr. S.D. Panchal, I/c Registrar of GTU said.

Technical Seminar and Workshop on High Precision Arc Welding Technology in India was held by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) & Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Japan. Lecture on Introduction of Japanese latest technology of welding equipment realizing quality improvement and total cost improvement was given by Mr Yukinori Hirota from Panasonic Smart Factory Solutions Co. Ltd. Lecture on Introduction of Japanese latest shield gas technology to improve welding quality was given by Mr Yoshifumi Yoshida from Iwatani Corporation. Lecture on Introduction of Japanese latest welding material technology to improve welding quality was given Mr Tetsunao Ikeda from Kobe Steel Ltd. Prof Fumiyoshi Minami from Joining & Welding Research Institute (JWRI) Osaka University talked about Importance of high precision arc welding technology and trends in new technology — Welding Mechanics and Design for Smart Manufacturing. Mr Masaharu Sato from The Japan Welding Engineering Society (JWES) spoke about Importance of certification scheme for welders, and actual cases in Japan and issues in India.
