Ahmedabad: Gujarat Technological University [GTU] affiliated institutes will organise a felicitation programme for Dr. Akshai Aggarwal and Welcome of Dr. Rajul Gajjar, I/c Vice Chancellor of GTU on Saturday, 11th June, 2016 at 6 pm. The programme will be held at B-0, GTU Chandkheda Campus. In the event Principals, Directors & Managing trustees of GTU affiliated colleges as well as GTU officers will be present.
Dr. Rajul Gajjar, principal of the Vishwakarma Government Engineering College (VGEC) at Chandkheda, took over as in-charge vice-chancellor of the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) on last Wednesday. She took the charge from 73-year-old Akshai Aggarwal, who completed six years as vice chancellor. DR. Gajjar would, however, continue as principal of her college as well while working as in-charge VC. GTU offices are within the campus of VGEC.
Aggarwal had taken over as VC in 2010 when the university was in its nascent stage. M N Patel, who is currently Gujarat University vice-chancellor, was the first in-charge VC of GTU for about a year prior to Dr. Aggarwal. Dr. Aggarwal, who had worked for several years in a technological university in Canada, used his experience to raise GTU among the best state technological university. Dr. Aggarwal also entered into a number of agreements with foreign universities, including arranging foreign guides for GTU’s PhD students free of cost. Dr. Aggarwal taken many initiatives including International Experience Programme (IEP), in which around 300 students of GTU are provided opportunity to study in USA, Germany, Canada and Russia. Similarly students from around 40 countries are studying in GTU affiliated colleges.
He promoted start-up culture in engineering colleges of the state and set up five zonal innovation councils comprising a group of colleges in each geographical zones of the state. GTU under Aggarwal was the first technological university to come up with its own start-up policy under which students running start-ups were given a number of relaxations. Many other universities took the idea of start up policy for students and implemented. Dr. Aggarwal’s this work was appreciated by AICTE chairman and he was assigned chairmanship in start up committee of AICTE. Dr. Aggarwal also played key role in forming national start up action plan.
He worked hard to link engineering colleges under it with the local industries, thus providing a chance to the students to have exposure of the industry while studying. Dr. Aggarwal was pioneer in establishing 25 Sankuls, which links industry with academia. The engineering students in their zones were encouraged to visit the industries and solve their technical problems. He invited experts from industry to guide students and also for improving syllabus to include latest research. He also took many steps to make students industry-ready.
