GTU signs MoU for International Ranking system for Universities

Global University Ranking Utility [GURU] to count Social contribution and feedback from Parents as well as Industries for the ranking

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has signed a MoU with Research for Resurgence (RFR) Foundation of Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal for new Ranking system for universities known as GURU [Global University Ranking Utility]. The MoU was signed by Shri Mukul Kanitkarji, Joint Organising Secretary, Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal and GTU, at Chandkheda campus. A delegation of Mandal including Dr. Rajesh Beniwal, Shri Rajendra Pathak, Vishisht Pandey and Rajgopalan Subrahmanium was also present on the occasion.

Most of Global Rankings are based on Western Education system containing single campus university. So despite good work, affiliated type of universities are not getting higher ranking. The GURU International Ranking will be based on Social Contribution. Our Education system is based on Contribution to the society. So the GURU ranking will not be based on achievement, but delivery based Ranking. Parent’s feedback, Industry feedback will also be considered for performance ranking. Around 60 institutes including IITs, NITs have already signed the MoU for GURU ranking.

Shri Kanitkarji said that when the world wants India to take leadership in education field, thinking to start global ranking is itself a very big idea. Our country was already world leader in almost all fields including education, trade, manufacturing, science & technology etc. before British Empire on India. He said that there is need of practical knowledge, who are teaching technical subjects. Education must be student-centric. Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal has started Research for Resurgent programme in 25 universities. He claimed that we have less industry-academia interface in India. This must be increased. We have started change of attitude campaign in the field of research.

Prof. (Dr.) Navin Sheth, Vice Chancellor of GTU said that the Ranking System is only beginning. We will develop the system so that it will be applicable to all the universities of the world. We want a ranking system, which can assess properly not only the single-campus universities of the west and of India but also the affiliating-type universities. All world renowned ranking systems like Times Higher Education (THE), QS and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARHU) focused only on criteria of academic and research activities carried out by any university. THE and QS system originates from UK and Europe and ARHU originates from China and developed to rank single campus Universities across the world. Prof. (Dr.) S.D. Panchal, I/c Registrar welcomed the delegation. Co-ordinator Amit Patel, I/c of GTU IPR cell presented the Vote of Thanks.
