GTU tops list of Gandhian Young Technology Innovation awards

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Technological University (GTU) tops the list of Universities/institutes who received the laurels of Gandhian Young Technology Innovation (GYTI) awards during 2012-16, according to recently announced statistics. Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI) gives Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award every year to foster youth-driven innovations.

GYTI is a pan India competition which receives more than 2000 innovation entries every year from Universities/Institutes. Since last 5 years out of 700 universities & institutes in India, total 182 GYTI awards have been given to Universities/institutes. According to recently released data, during the period GTU, IIT Delhi & IIT Kanpur teams bagged the highest 15 GYTI awards each. GTU students have taken leadership in winning every time and demonstrated their capacity to solve social challenges, said Dr. Rajul Gajjar, I/c Vice Chancellor of GTU.

GTU is the 1st large scale affiliated type technology university in India, which has established 1st of its kind University based Innovation Ecosystem since 2010. GTU has included innovation in 100-point program compulsory to get degree certificate. GTU is planning to start India’s largest start up Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to foster innovation. The efforts and processes developed at GTU Innovation Council have inspired many universities, states and national policy makers to try similar efforts. Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Awards celebrates the spirit of student innovation in the fields of engineering, science, biotechnology, medical solution, extremely affordable/frugal solution for communities at grassroots, co-creation with grassroots innovators, manufacturable technologies for saving or generating energy, sanitation, water purification and all others areas of social and industrial applications.

Since last 2 editions this award is being given away at Rashtrapati Bhavan during festival of innovation every year at the hands of eminent scientist Dr. R.A.Mashelkar. Next year, these awards are due tentatively on March 5, 2017 at FOIN.
