India’s e-commerce sector to grow 10-fold in next five years to reach $100 billion

Problems & challenges in e-commerce will be discussed @ GTU conference

Ahmedabad: By 2017, India will have 350 million smartphones and rural penetration of broadband internet will increase. Due to these factors, India’s e-commerce sector, which is around $10 billion (Rs. 65,000 crore) at present, is likely to grow ten-fold in next five years to reach $100 billion. To discuss the possible problems and challenge that may arise due to this trend, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) will organise an international conference. More than 250 delegates are registered for the conference.

Under the guidance of Dr Rajul Gajjar, I/c Vice Chancellor, GTU, PG Research Centre for Governance Systems (CGS) & Centre for Marketing Excellence (CME) of GTU are organizing an International Conference on “Governance in E-Commerce: Contemporary Issues & Challenges” on 2nd & 3rdSeptember, 2016. The Conference would explore Opportunities, Problems and Governance Issues of safety of money, delivery and frauds in e-commerce sector. More than 75 research paper has been received and will be presented during the conference.

Series of key note addresses from the speakers like Anand Madia Secretary of Technology, Govt of Sikkim, Mr. Harjeet Singh Khanduja, Vice President at Reliance Jio Infocomm. Mr. Vivek Kejariwal Founder & CEO, OneWay Cab and Mr. Hiten H. Bhuta , President & CEO CGS Infotech Ltd. belonging from E-commerce business  and technology has been arranged during the conference.

Mr. Hiten Bhuta’s session on Governance in E-Commerce will highlight urgent need to create important policies and rules. It will also dwell upon international practices for Governance in E-Commerce. All Government regulations are designed for brick-n-mortar regular businesses. E-Commerce business has created new challenges and opportunities. Today the rules for regular taxis and auto rickshaws are quite stringent, whereas the rules for Uber are different. The rules for hotel property are well-defined and strict, whereas rules for E-commerce based online booking on airbnb are different. Mr. Bhuta will suggest important policy ideas on Governance in E-commerce.

E Commerce is growing tremendously every year at least by Fifty to Sixty percent. In the year 2015, consumers in India purchased Twenty Billion dollars products. It is estimated that 300 million customers are buying on line from three major E Commerce players, namely, FLIPKART, Snapdeal, Amazon and others. More than 300,000 sellers are selling their products on E Commerce platform. There is a serious competition among all major players. AMAZON with almost same value of over ten billion dollars as of FLIPKART and Snapdeal with seven billion dollars make up almost eighty percent of the market. More than few thousand products are purchased on E Commerce platform, a revolutionary Distribution Channel with huge potential, real time and to some extent interactive. The consumer is empowered by vital relevant information of the products, price, product specifications and competitors.
