International Conference on STEM at Science City on 17th Jan

Experts from across the globe addressing more than 2000 students, faculties & researchers from 65 universities of Gujarat:

Under the aegis of the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2019, the Government of Gujarat is organizing an event on promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as a discipline of education and as an area of research & innovation on January 17, 2019. This is aligned with the Central Government’s agenda to make education more experiment based and practical. This program aims to invite the best experts from across the globe who will address 2000 plus science, engineering, technology graduates, post graduates, faculty members and researchers from 65 plus universities in Gujarat.


A roundtable is also being organized on the sidelines of this conference during which senior officials from Government of India, other states, academicians and private players will deliberate on the roadmap of STEM education in India. This roundtable will be presided upon by Shri Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India.


The speakers at the Conference include Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India; Mr R. Subrahmanyam, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India; Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Professor, Machine Intelligence Unit and Director, Indian Statistical Institute and Dr. Liesl Folks, Dean, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences & Prof., Electrical Engineering at the University of Buffalo; Prof. V. Chandrasekhar, Centre Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Hyderabad and Prof. Mike Bergin, School of Civil and


Environmental Engineering, Duke University. The panel of these eminent speakers will deliberate on “STEM Education and Research – Opportunities Ahead in India”.

“The objective of the conference will be to find actionable solutions and policy interventions that could promote STEM in India and also to develop a roadmap for STEM education in India to bridge the existing skill gap between the industry requirements and academic curricula.”


According to the National Science Foundation, it is predicted that 80% of the jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills. Speaking to the media, Principal Secretary Technical and Higher Education, Smt. Anju Sharma said, “STEM discipline is of extreme importance for a country like India which thrives on sectors such as manufacturing of engineering goods including auto components, life sciences, agri & food processing and start up & innovation. STEM is methodology of delivering education which focuses on learning by doing. ” “Gujarat is a significant contributor to national numbers both in terms of output and manpower. It contributes 19% of India’s industrial output and houses 10% of the total factories. It houses reputed educational institutes/universities such as PDPU, DA-IICT, GTU which focus on promoting innovation and experiment,” she added.


A call has been made for research papers in three categories: Policy reform required to promote STEM; Pedagogical interventions to promote STEM disciplines; and STEM for Innovation & Research. More than 100 research papers have been received by the Department from national and international universities. These research papers are being published in a special edition peer oriented journal. The best paper be presented during the conference. The top 3 papers will be awarded Rs 1 lakh, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000, respectively.


Research students will have an opportunity to present their papers in three categories:

Along with the International Conference on STEM, Science City is also hosting exhibitions on Futuristic Technologies and Space exploration, making this Vibrant Gujarat Summit particularly attractive to youth of the State.
