National Heritage Research Center inaugurated at GTU

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has inaugurated National Heritage Research Center to Preserve / Protect / Develop Heritage Structures of India. Graduate School of Smart Cities Development (GSSCD) of GTU. National Heritage Research Centre got first research consultancy assignment from Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited, Gandhinagar to prepare Feasibility report on Geo Tourism on Pavagadh vulacano hills. Work has started and samples of rocks collected.

Prof. Rajnikant Patel, Honorary Director of Graduate School of Smart Cities Development (GSSCD) GTU and andDr T Harinarayana, Advisor gave presentation about the centre& said that the Centre will provide services to Heritage Properties in the field of Engineering will include Surveying of the property by clone, Seismic Hazards Assessment, Structure Design for Renovation, Application of Advance Chemical, and Technologies for Preservation & Environment Protection. Services offered to Heritage Properties in the field of Management will include Promotion of The Property for Tourism, Funding Options for renovation & Advance Management of the Property.Potential Consultancy Projects of the Lab will include Geo tourism in Kutch District, Earth quake proof foundations of Sarkhej Roza and Sidi Sayad Jali etc. It will also explore research work for the Heritage Properties of Jaipur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Udaipur, Ujjain   etc

Prof. (Dr). Navin Sheth, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor GTU said in his greetings message that Graduate School of Smart Cities Development(GSSCD) of GTU is working to create a resource center for the nation for the requirement of the cities and citizens and helps in the smart cities development. The Graduate School seeks to involve industries and the society to ensure that its studies and research have a relevance to the needs of the society and the industries. The Graduate School also promotes institutes for research partnership to carry out the research for the components at grass root level of smart city development. Currently there are more than 30 colleges/institutes in Gujarat as Research Partners of the Graduate School including L.D. College Of Engineering, Ahmedabad, SAL Engineering College, Silver Oak Engineering College, Som-Lalit Institute of Management, Institute of Seismological Research (ISR)-Gandhinagar.

Prof.(Dr.) S.D. Panchal, I/c Registrar, GTU gave welcome speech & put emphasis on using latest techniques of engineering in the research of Heritage structures. Seismic Assessment of Heritage Monuments Presentation was done by DR. Ravi Kumar, Director General. Dr. Sumer Chopra Director, Institute of seismological research Gandhinagar touched upon the seismic aspect of heritage properties.

Dr. P.K.Ghosh–IAS (retired) Chairman–Ahmedabad Heritage project gave idea about the Ahmedabad project.Recently Ahmedabad City has been declared as World Heritage City by UNESCO. It is the first and only city in India to get this unique status, though individual monuments having this status are plenty. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is having well planned Heritage conservation scheme. Ahmedabad is said to have a rich and sundry architecture having a combination of both- the age-old architectonics and the modern infrastructure. It is adorned with the Indo-Islamic architecture dated back in the 9th to 13th Century and Jain temples which are architectural marvels from primitive Gujarat. At one place where the old city consists of ‘Pols’ which has a traditional wooden construction, with congested and compact neighborhood, the new city is known as ‘Pur’ which has wide and broadened roads and contemporary architecture. The rich and varied heritage of Ahmedabad can be described from its structures like Calico Museum, Sabarmati Ashram, Kankaria Lake, Jama Masjid, SidiSaiyyed Mosque, Vastrapura Lake, Teen Darwaza, Sidi Bashir Mosque, SardarVallabhbhai Patel National Memorial, SarkhejRoza, LalbbhaiDalpatbhai Museum, Gates of Ahmedabad, Sabarmati Riverfront and many more.

Type of Heritage:

  1. Man-made heritage properties: reflecting cultural history such as palaces, castles, temples, relegeous worshiping places, colloseum, hotel, houses, etc.

Natural heritage properties: like water falls, mountains, vulanoes, hot water springs,  sea beaches, islands, etc.
