GTU sets up model for creation of toilets in villages

Ahmedabad: Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi has appreciated work of students from Gujarat Technological University (GTU) for creating 9000 toilets in 107 villages within One week. The Shramdan (work) was done under National Service Scheme (NSS) in which around 6000 students of engineering students actively participated.

Shri Modi mentioned the work of GTU students for social cause in ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Prime Minister addressed the nation for the 24th time in the Mann Ki Baat radio programme on Sunday. He said as part of Swachchhh Bharat, about 2.5 crore toilets have been constructed in rural India so far. 1.5 Cr more will be constructed in next year. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Kerala are very close to becoming open defecation free, while Porbandar in Gujarat which is the birth place of Mahatama Gandhi will become ODF on his birth anniversary on 2 October.

Dr. Rajul Gajjar, I/c Vice Chancellor of GTU said that hon’ble Prime Minister thought about Swachchh Bharat campaign and hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Vijaybhai Rupani expressed determination to implement that. Hon’ble Education Minister Shri Bhupendrasinh Chudasama called VCs meeting to discuss how universities can contribute in the campaign. GTU took it as project mode and prepared a time-table and put 5 volunteers, two teachers with team allotted by DDO and DRDA. Our well-planned strategy became successful and in this way we helped villagers by creating toilets. Some of the villages were located in remote area. If any other university from anywhere in India takes interest for the social cause, GTU is ready to provide the Model we created. GTU model can be rolled out anywhere, we will provide the plan we implemented successfully.

We used empty computer boxes and buckets which were given to villagers for using as dust bins. Our students campaigned in schools and we also connected elders for this cause. Now we are going to start next round of Swachchh Bharat Abhiyaan, we will cover more villages. We have planned a meeting on Monday to finalise the next time table, Capt. C.S. Sanghavi, NSS co-ordinator of GTU said.

As our students are from engineering college, major benefit they get from the work of the social cause was they became aware from the problems of villagers. Every engineering college student has to make a project in his or her final year. The village visit can help them to identify the problem and by finding proper solution, student can make innovative projects, Prof. Alpesh Dafda, NSS co-ordinator of Vishwakarma Government Engineering college said.

GTU to participate in Joy of Giving

Dr. Gajjar also announced that GTU students will participate in Joy of Giving as per idea presented by hon’ble Prime Minister. Joy of Giving week will be celebrated during 2nd to 8th October, 2016. Before that students of GTU affiliated colleges will collect toys and other things from society. They will clean, repair and will do some value addition in that. After that those things will be given to needy families.
