“To keep the pace with rapidly changing technologies, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is planning to launch Diploma and Certificate courses on Emerging Technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Block Chain etc. both offline & online. More Skill Development initiatives will be launched for making them more employable. More Faculty Development Programs are being planned for providing training about the latest aspects.” This was announced by Prof.(Dr) Navin Sheth, Vice Chancellor of GTU in first of its kind two-days Workshop on “Emerging Technologies: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning” at GTU, Chandkheda campus. Around 200 students & faculty members from all over Gujarat and few from Rajasthan also participated in the mega event.
“Technology is changing at rapid speed. If you do not focus on latest technologies in next 10 to 15 years, you will be vanished. Last year 8 lakh patents were filed by China, while about 6.5 lakh by US and we are lagging behind with 53000 patents filed by India. GTU Innovation Council developed ecosystem of Start - up and Innovation. The activities were appreciated by AICTE. Now 452 colleges of GTU can take benefits of the proposed courses related to latest technologies. These courses will be It is first of its kind courses in country in affiliating university on Emerging Technologies that GTU is initiating at such a large scale, this will put GTU on National map and contribute directly to Make in India and Start-up in India at larger scale in technological advancements. These courses would provide a better platform for student innovators and start-ups in competing globally in the era of disruption and exponential growth. Through such skill based, practical learning oriented courses, GTU would contribute in supporting industries to provide adequate talented and skilled manpower. Such courses can equip GTU students to get better salary and job profile in coming years”, Dr. Sheth added.
Expert Dr. Deepu Philip, faculty in the IME Department of IIT Kanpur, who is also a faculty of the Design Program and heads the smart systems and operations laboratory of IIT Kanpur was called in GTU for the guidance in the workshop. He said that “problem solving like traffic etc & Smart transportation will be a big task in upcoming years. To solve such problems, outreach & skill development must be necessary for students. Be the change.” Dr. Ashutosh Khanna, faculty of Strategy at International Management Institute, New Delhi, head for Strategy & General Management and Chairman of the Center for Disruptive Innovation & Enterprise [CDIE] was another expert in the workshop. He said that, “strategic point of view, we have to use state of the art technologies. We will have no other option & it will make us more productive. Systems to be set up in 21th century, will be commanding control system. In Indian culture now it will be necessary to use latest technologies more & more. Population of India is now being seen as vast opportunities. Now the competition of India is at Global level.”
Shri. Rohit Swarup, Chairman, Innovation & Research Foundation also gave guidance to the students & faculty members. He said that, “AI is horizontal skill, which will be necessity in all fields. There are lots of happenings in emerging technologies, since last 5 years in India. Emerging technologies are not just coding skills & creating algorithms but primary role is to find the problems in vicinity & finding solutions of the problems.”
Mr. Karmjitsinh Bihola, Asst. Prof., Centre for Industrial Design (Open Design School) & Coordinator, Design Innovation Centre (DIC - MHRD Scheme) was the coordinator of the event. He presented the Vote of Thanks & said that, “GTU is establishing a full-fledged Design Innovation Centre (DIC) to support ideas of student innovators at University Premise as Hub and other 3 institutes (in Rajkot, Surat and Modasa) as spokes to cover entire state. The basic purpose of setting up DIC is to promote, nurture and advance the culture of design, innovation, creative problem solving and entrepreneurship among young minds. GTU - DIC would support in product design and development, prototype building through full-fledged FabLab, mentorship and networking, IPR support, training and workshop, skill developments, fellowship and awards to best projects/solutions, co-working space etc. Through such workshops, GTU will provide exposure & understanding of the Courses provided by the unique SSOL Portal of IIT Kanpur, to its 4.5 lakh students and 21K faculty members.” There was a panel discussion on “Emerging Technologies - Opportunities, Manpower Gap & Industry Expectations” by Industry and Government experts and “Emerging Technologies – Role of academia, efforts done to meet Industry Expectations” by academic experts followed by Q&A.
